Berczy Village is named after William Berczy, a German-born artist and co-founder of Markham. In 1794, Berczy led approximately 64 German families to settle in Upper Canada, helping to establish the Markham community through their efforts in building homes and roads.
His legacy is honored through limestone plaques at village entrances and the area’s heritage-style homes. Beyond Markham, Berczy also played a key role in the early development of York, modern-day Toronto.
