Neighbourhood Overview

Where Markham's Story Began — In 1794

German Mills holds a singular place in Markham — and Canadian — history. When William Moll Berczy led a group of 64 families (182 people) to old York County in the summer of 1794, German Mills became the first significant industrial complex in Markham Township. Berczy's diverse group of settlers — bakers, blacksmiths, carpenters, weavers, a brewer, a potter, and stonemasons — quickly established a grist mill, sawmill, and blacksmith's forge along the Don River. The lumber they produced helped build the first houses in what would become Toronto, including Russell Abbey, home of the Administrator of Upper Canada.

Today, German Mills is a mature, family-oriented residential community in southwest Markham, bordering Toronto along Steeles Avenue. The bulk of the neighbourhood's housing stock was built between the 1960s and 1980s — well-constructed detached and semi-detached homes in the Tudor Revival style, characterised by distinctive half-timbering accents on façades, with newer townhome enclaves woven throughout. Approximately 89 percent of residents own their homes, reflecting the strong attachment families develop to this community over time.

The German Mills schoolhouse — constructed in 1874 and now preserved under the Ontario Heritage Act as the German Mills Community Centre at 80 German Mills Road — serves as a living bridge between the neighbourhood's founding story and the families who call it home today. For buyers who value genuine history, mature landscapes, excellent educational access, and the beloved German Mills Settlers Park trail system, this is one of Markham's most rewarding places to put down roots.

Why German Mills

What Makes German Mills Stand Out

From its unmatched founding history and beloved trail network to excellent schools, mature housing stock, and proximity to Highway 404 — here's why German Mills remains one of southwest Markham's most consistently desirable family communities.

01
Canada's Most Historic Markham Address
German Mills was the first significant industrial complex in Markham Township, and William Berczy — its founder — is recognized today as the "Founder of Markham" and "Co-Founder of Toronto." The community's heritage is physically anchored by the 1874 schoolhouse (now the German Mills Community Centre), one of the few surviving historic schoolhouses remaining in Markham.
02
German Mills Settlers Park & Trails
The beloved German Mills Settlers Park on John Street features a popular 2.1-kilometre trail loop winding through meadows and wooded river corridors. Wildlife sightings — including salmon — make this a favourite of residents and visitors year-round. Simonston Park and Paddock Park add further green space, tennis courts, sports fields, and playgrounds to the neighbourhood.
03
Exceptional School Access
German Mills residents benefit from access to seven public schools, four to five Catholic schools, and multiple private school options. Specialty programs include the International Baccalaureate, French Immersion, Fine Arts, and Advanced Placement — making this one of southwest Markham's most educationally well-resourced communities for families with children of all ages and academic interests.
04
Distinctive Tudor Revival Architecture
The neighbourhood's characteristic 1970s–1980s housing stock features the Tudor Revival style — half-timbering accents, brick façades, and traditional proportions — that gives German Mills a visual coherence and neighbourhood character increasingly rare in newer master-planned communities. Buyers who value architectural identity over generic production housing find German Mills genuinely compelling.
05
Southwest Markham Connectivity
German Mills sits along the Don Mills Road corridor north of Steeles Avenue, providing exceptional access to Highway 404 (five minutes by car) and the expressway 407 corridor. TTC bus routes at the Steeles Avenue border connect residents to the broader Toronto transit network — making German Mills one of Markham's most accessible communities for downtown commuters.
06
Stable Long-Term Value
With 89 percent owner-occupancy, strong school-district fundamentals, and a mature housing stock that attracts buyers across multiple life stages, German Mills has delivered consistent long-term value. Average sold prices in the area have historically tracked at or above the broader Markham average — reflecting the enduring demand for what this distinctive community offers.
