Between 1840 and 1860, Armadale flourished as a thriving village, before the Toronto and Nipissing Railway bypassed it in 1871, redirecting growth elsewhere.
The Markham portion of Armadale, north of Steeles Avenue, was developed in the 1980s and 1990s as a predominantly residential community, offering middle-income families well-constructed detached and semi-detached homes on generous suburban lots. Today, approximately 95 percent of residents in the Markham section are homeowners — a testament to the community's stability and the pride residents take in their properties.
