Markham School Zones Map: How Catchments Really Work
Quick answer: Markham's school zones, or catchments, are attendance areas set by the York Region District School Board and the York Catholic District School Board. The public board reviews them every year, some new areas are held at other schools until a school opens, and some schools are capped or closed to transfers. Only the boards' school locators can confirm which school serves an address. This map shows every Markham secondary school and French Immersion elementary school, with links to the official boundary maps.

The map shows school locations, not boundaries. Boundaries are drawn by the boards and can change; the official maps are linked in each school's pop-up and below.
The Basics
How School Zones Work in Markham
Every home in Markham has a designated public school and a designated Catholic school at each level: elementary, sometimes middle, and secondary. French Immersion has its own separate set of boundaries and locations.
The public board governs its attendance areas through Board Policy 108 and reviews them every year. When an area grows faster than its school, the board may use portables, hold new students at another school, or start a boundary review. When a school fills, it may be capped or closed to transfers.
That is why a neighbourhood name is not enough. Two homes on either side of one road can be served by different schools, and a home in a new subdivision can be held at a school several kilometres away for years.
- Attendance area
- The boundary a board draws around each school. Your address decides which one you are in.
- Holding school
- Where students from a new or growing area attend until their own school opens.
- Capped school
- A school that has reached capacity, where new students may be directed elsewhere.
- Closed to transfers
- A school that is not accepting students from outside its boundary.
- Out-of-area transfer
- A request to attend a school outside your boundary, decided by the school and board, usually without busing.
Before You Offer
Check Any Address in Five Steps
Michael John Lau walks buyers through this for every family purchase.
- 01
Run the address in both locators
Use the YRDSB School Locator and the YCDSB Home School Locator. Note the elementary, secondary and French Immersion schools for the exact address.
- 02
Read the boundary map notes
Each public school's boundary map includes notes about holding areas and new development. The notes for four Markham schools are quoted below.
- 03
Check caps and transfers for this year
Confirm whether the school is capped or closed to transfers on the public board's notice and the Catholic board's registration page.
- 04
Call the school
Ask the office to confirm the address, whether new students are being held elsewhere, and whether any boundary review is under way.
- 05
Plan your proof of residence
Registration needs originals. At the public board that means one Category A document, such as a property tax bill or a purchase agreement with proof of closing, plus two Category B documents such as utility bills. Registration rules.

School Zone Questions
Yes. The York Region District School Board publishes an online School Locator and a boundary map for each school, and the York Catholic board has a Home School Locator. This page maps every Markham secondary school and French Immersion elementary school, with links to the official boundary maps.
The public board reviews attendance areas every year, and boundaries and holding areas can change. New schools, such as those proposed for Angus Glen South and Markham Centre in 2028, bring boundary reviews with them.
A holding school is where students from a new or growing area attend until a school for their area opens. For example, the public board holds students in the future Greensborough secondary boundary at Bur Oak SS.
No. Listings can be out of date or wrong. Only the school board can confirm which school serves an address. Check the board locators, read the boundary notes, and call the school before you make an offer.
The public board asks for one Category A document, such as a property tax bill, MPAC notice, purchase agreement with proof of closing, stamped bank statement or CRA document, and two Category B documents, such as utility bills. Leases, driver's licences and cell phone bills are not accepted. Originals only.
For 2026-27, Markville SS and Unionville HS have no enrolment cap but remain closed to transfers. At the Catholic board, St. Augustine CHS and St. Robert CHS are capped schools.
