Two Weeks Before: Safety and Systems

Test every alarm

Ontario requires working smoke alarms on every storey of a home and outside sleeping areas. If your home has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage, it also requires carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas. With the oven, cooktop and possibly a gas fireplace running at once, this is the weekend they matter most. Press the test button on each one and replace batteries or units that have reached the end of their life.

The first cool nights often arrive around Thanksgiving. A furnace that has not run since spring is best checked before a full house depends on it. Replace the filter at the same time.

Check the kitchen workhorses

• Run the oven at full temperature for an hour and confirm it holds heat evenly.
• Clean the range hood filter. It will be working all afternoon.
• Test the dishwasher and garbage disposal with a full load, not a half load.
• Clear space in the fridge and freezer, or plan for a second cooler in the garage.

One Week Before: Arrival and Flow

The entry

The front door is the first impression for guests and for buyers. Sweep the porch, clear leaves from the walkway, and check that exterior lights work. Days are noticeably shorter by mid-October, and many guests will leave after dark.

Coats and shoes

The guest bathroom

• Stock extra towels, toilet paper, hand soap and a spare toothbrush.
• Fix a running toilet or dripping tap now. Guests notice both.
• Check that the exhaust fan works, especially if several people will shower in the morning.

The Day Of: Keep It Simple

• Run the dishwasher before guests arrive so it is empty for the first load.
• Keep the laundry room clear for coats, extra chairs or a second fridge.
• Open a window briefly while cooking to manage heat and humidity.
• Keep a small first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher where you can find them quickly.
