New Schools in Markham: What Is Coming From 2027 to 2030

By Michael John Lau, REALTOR® · Kaizen Real Estate Team, eXp Realty · 80+ five star reviews

The short answer

The York Region District School Board (YRDSB) lists five school projects for Markham. The Markville Secondary School addition is proposed for September 2027. Angus Glen South Elementary School and Markham Centre Elementary School are proposed for September 2028. Village Parkway Elementary School is proposed for September 2029. Berczy Glen Secondary School is proposed for September 2030.

Every date depends on approvals and construction. And one rule matters most: do not assume a home is in a new school's zone until YRDSB approves the boundary.

For many Markham families, the home search starts with one quiet question. Where will our children go to school?

It is a fair question. The school down the street shapes your mornings, your drive and the friends your children make. So when news of a new school spreads, families pay close attention.

Michael John Lau leads the Kaizen Real Estate Team, trusted by Markham families, with 80+ five star reviews. New schools come up often in his conversations with buyers and sellers. This guide gathers what YRDSB has published as of November 4, 2026, so you can plan with facts, not rumours.

A new school nearby is not the same as a new school zone

Picture a young family touring a home in Markham Centre. They have read that a new elementary school is planned close by. The walk looks short. The plan feels simple: buy now, and the children walk to the new school when it opens.

Here is the part that is easy to miss. YRDSB's own map says a designated boundary for Markham Centre Elementary School is not available yet. Until the board approves one, nobody can promise which streets will be included.

Distance on a map does not decide where a child goes to school. The approved boundary does.

What families assume versus what YRDSB has confirmed

Common assumption

The opening date is set.

What YRDSB says

Opening dates are proposed. They depend on municipal and ministry approvals through construction.

Common assumption

If we live close, our child will attend.

What YRDSB says

Attendance follows an approved boundary. The Markham Centre and Village Parkway boundaries are still being created.

Common assumption

Once a date is announced, it stays.

What YRDSB says

Markham Centre Elementary School was planned for 2026. It is now proposed for September 2028.

The five Markham school projects at a glance

Here is each project in order of its proposed opening, with the details YRDSB has published.

Proposed September 2027

Markville Secondary School addition

An addition to an existing high school. Proposed capacity with the addition: 1,601 students.

Proposed September 2028

Angus Glen South Elementary School

A new elementary school with a child care centre. Proposed capacity: 637 students. YRDSB has posted a boundary map for this school.

Proposed September 2028

Markham Centre Elementary School

A new elementary school with a child care centre. Proposed capacity: 638 students. Boundary not yet available.

Proposed September 2029

Village Parkway Elementary School

A new elementary school with a child care centre. Proposed capacity: 637 students. Boundary review scheduled to begin Fall 2026.

Proposed September 2030

Berczy Glen Secondary School

A new high school. Proposed capacity: 1,301 students. Boundary review scheduled to begin Fall 2028.

Markville Secondary School addition: September 2027

This is the first project on the list. It is not a new school. It is more space at a school that already serves the community. YRDSB proposes September 2027 for the addition, which would bring Markville's proposed capacity to 1,601 students.

The new schools page lists the addition and its capacity only. If you are looking at homes in this part of Markham, Michael John Lau's Markville Secondary School area guide covers the neighbourhood itself.

Angus Glen South Elementary School: September 2028

Angus Glen South is proposed to open in September 2028 with room for 637 students and a child care centre on site.

Unlike the Markham Centre school, YRDSB has already posted a boundary map for Angus Glen South. That is helpful, but it is still worth checking the exact address against the map rather than the street name alone. For a closer look at the community, read Buying a Home in Angus Glen.

Markham Centre Elementary School: September 2028

Markham Centre Elementary School is proposed for September 2028, with 638 student spaces and a child care centre.

This school was first planned to open in 2026. A YRDSB report shows the date moving to 2028. The design is built for a city setting: a three storey urban school with underground parking and a bus loop shared with a neighbouring condominium.

The key detail for buyers: the boundary for this school is not available yet. YRDSB lists the boundary review to create its attendance area as starting in Fall 2026.

Village Parkway Elementary School: September 2029

Village Parkway Elementary School is proposed for September 2029, with 637 student spaces and a child care centre. Like Markham Centre, its boundary review is scheduled to begin in Fall 2026. Until that review is approved, no home can be confirmed inside its zone.

Berczy Glen Secondary School: September 2030

Berczy Glen Secondary School is the furthest out. It is proposed for September 2030 with capacity for 1,301 students. YRDSB says the boundary review for this high school will begin in Fall 2028. That means families will wait a while before they know which streets it will serve.

How a YRDSB boundary review works

A boundary is the map that decides which homes attend which school. YRDSB follows a yearly process to set or change one. Here is the general schedule the board publishes:

September: The board identifies areas that need review.

October to November: A recommended option goes to the board's Property Management Committee.

October to February: Public consultation, including school council meetings and a public meeting.

January to March: The proposed boundary returns to the Property Management Committee.

March to April: Trustees review it at a Board Standing meeting.

April to May: The boundary goes to the Board for final approval.

Families can take part. You can attend school council and public meetings, fill out feedback forms and speak with board staff. The board's boundary page has the details.

What this means if you are buying or selling

If you are buying, a few simple habits protect you:

  • Check the current designated schools for the exact address using YRDSB's Find My School tool.
  • Treat a new school as possible, not promised, until its boundary is approved.
  • Plan around the school that serves the home today, and see a new school as a future option.
  • Ask questions early. A boundary review has public meetings where you can learn more.

If you are selling, clear and honest details build trust with buyers:

  • Share the schools that currently serve your home.
  • Describe any nearby new school as proposed, with its proposed opening date.
  • Avoid suggesting your home is in a new school's zone before the board approves it.
