Markham Centre, often called Downtown Markham or Uptown Markham, has been one of the busiest growth areas in the city. Until now, elementary students living there have been held at schools outside the area while a local school was planned.

Markham Centre Elementary School is the answer to that wait. Its proposed opening is September 2028, with 638 student spaces and 39 licensed child care spaces.

The open question is the boundary. YRDSB says its review to create the attendance area for this school begins in Fall 2026. Until that review is complete, no street is officially assigned to the new school.

The school is at 43 Scenic Drive in Markham. It sits on the north side of Rougeside Promenade, west of Warden Avenue and south of Highway 7, in the Markham Centre area. YRDSB lists the project in Wards 3 and 4.

Site plan coverage describes a three storey school on Zone 3, Block 6 of Uptown Markham.

A common mix up: Some earlier local coverage linked this school to the corner of Village Parkway and Frank Charlton Avenue. That site belongs to a different project, Village Parkway Elementary School. Markham Centre Elementary School is at 43 Scenic Drive.

Status and Timeline

This school is funded and has moved through the main planning steps. Here is the published YRDSB schedule:

June 23, 2023: Site plan milestone.
Design: Makrimichalos Cugini is the architect.
February 4, 2025: Tender close.
April 3, 2025: Construction start in the YRDSB schedule.
Fall 2026: Boundary review begins.
September 2028: Proposed opening.

Funding totals $15.8 million for the school and child care, according to local reporting that quoted the YRDSB chair and MPP Billy Pang.
