Not every new school is at the same stage. Village Parkway Elementary School has Ministry approval and a proposed opening of September 2029, but it is still in design and waiting on City of Markham site plan approval.

For families nearby, or anyone thinking about buying in the area, that means two things. There is a real, approved plan for a new elementary school with room for 637 students. And many details, including the boundary, are not set yet.

The difference between a planned school and an open school matters. Knowing which stage a project is at helps you weigh it properly in a home decision.

This post is part of the Kaizen Real Estate Team guide to new schools coming to Markham from 2027 to 2030. Below, Michael John Lau, REALTOR®, sets out the published facts and what they mean if you own, plan to buy, or plan to sell nearby.

Location

The school is planned near Village Parkway and Frank Charlton Avenue in Markham, in City of Markham Ward 3, based on a March 2026 YRDSB agenda. YRDSB has not published the exact corner or a civic address yet.

A common mix up: This is a different project from Markham Centre Elementary School at 43 Scenic Drive. Some earlier coverage placed the Markham Centre school at Village Parkway and Frank Charlton Avenue. That was not correct. The two schools are separate.

As the City of Markham site plan process moves forward, watch city records and YRDSB updates for the final site details.

Status and Timeline

Here is where Village Parkway Elementary School stands, based on YRDSB and public construction listings:

  • Approval: YRDSB lists the school as approved by the Ministry of Education.
  • Design: Makrimichalos Cugini Architects is the architect.
  • Site plan: Design is ongoing and awaiting City of Markham site plan approval, according to public construction listings.
  • Tender: The same listings indicated a tender may be issued in fall 2026.
  • Fall 2026: Boundary review begins.
  • September 2029: Proposed opening.

Public construction listings estimate the project value at about $30 million. YRDSB has not published a final project budget for this school yet.

Please note: YRDSB states that all school opening dates are subject to the timing of municipal and ministry approvals through the construction process. Every date in this post is a proposed date, not a promise.

Programs and Specialization

YRDSB has not published any specialized program for Village Parkway Elementary School, such as French Immersion, arts, STEM or gifted programming.

At this early stage, it is best not to plan around a program that has not been announced. If a specific program matters to your family, wait for an official YRDSB announcement.

Boundary and Catchment

YRDSB says a boundary review for Village Parkway Elementary School will begin in Fall 2026. No boundary map has been published yet.

YRDSB has also not published which current schools the new school will relieve. Until the review is complete, existing boundaries decide where students attend.

To check which school serves an address today, use the YRDSB School Locator. For questions about the review, email YRDSB Planning Services at planning.services@yrdsb.ca.

Capacity and Grades

Village Parkway Elementary School is planned for 637 students. Public construction listings describe a two storey building of about 65,089 square feet, with child care included.

YRDSB has not published the number of child care spaces or the age groups they will serve. YRDSB has also not published the grade range yet.

What It Means for Home Buyers and Sellers

A school that is still in design is a reason to ask good questions, not a reason to rush.

If you are buying

For the next few years, current school assignments are what matter most. Check the address in the School Locator, and treat the new school as a future possibility until the boundary is approved.

Michael John Lau encourages buyers to look at timing honestly. A proposed 2029 opening, with site plan approval still pending, leaves room for change. Build your decision on what you know today.

If you are selling

If you mention the new school in your marketing, describe it as planned and proposed for September 2029, and note that the boundary is not set. Clear language builds trust with buyers and avoids problems later in the sale.
